Social Media Video as a Vessel for News
Multimedia explainer videos combine visuals, narration, text and sound to simplify complex topics and engage audiences across digital platforms.
In the media industry, they serve as powerful storytelling tools, breaking down news events, policies or social issues into concise, visually compelling formats that are easy to understand and share.
Here, I break down two videos that I find are reaching newer, younger audiences right where they get their daily news from:
Brianna's video combines a popular topic, such as the Super Bowl and a more niche topic like the ads that get hundreds of millions of views. She breaks down how the ads are more than just commercials, but a stage for viewers across the world to be influenced by large companies and organizations. Over 130 million people viewed the Super Bowl this year, which means ad spots go for large sums of money. This video brings an informational topic to audiences who may not be thinking too deeply about one of the largest cultural events on the planet.
Melia's video on the Super Bowl halftime show brings together multiple aspects of storytelling into one concise YouTube Short. She introduces her topic, Bad Bunny, and goes into detail about his historic halftime show for Super Bowl 60. Her use of visual stills and embedded video highlights how multiple elements keep a viewer engaged for more than their normal attention span. This form of informational storytelling reaches young users where they are online in the modern digital age. Melia blends a cultural subject with journalism in a prime way to explain how music can be used as a tool for resistance as much as it is a force to bring us together.
